Louisiana has average rankings overall for government. This is buoyed by low tax burden on citizens. Additionally, the state has low rates of workplace injury.
In all other areas, Louisiana’s outcomes are grim.
First and foremost, Louisiana has to address public safety, health and education. The state’s measures in K-12 and college are all (with the exception of SAT and ACT scores) some of the worst in the union. Cost of healthcare is average, yet the rate of uninsured is extremely high. Combating this must come before obesity and smoking, as those are behavioral and therefore more difficult to change. Much of the poor safety number comes form property and violent crimes. Greater concentration and resources in these areas should alleviate much of the other lackluster safety outcomes.
