Despite setbacks in industrial manufacturing in recent decades, Michigan still standout as having a prosperous economy. The state has solid job growth numbers and remains one of the largest state economies in the nation. in terms of state government, Michigan has a small government proportional to the population it has to serve. It is a top innovator in government use of technology and is one of our Results Champions.

Michigan is behind the average rankings in environment, education, and public health. Specifically, the state is bottom 10 for renewable energy as well as obesity. Despite a large and thriving economy, the state is gripped by persistent unemployment issues.

Recommendations
Michigan has improved its economy since the grim situation during the Great Recession. It should continue to find new economic methods to improve employment as well as job and new firm growth (which teeter at 40th place among states). Many of the state’s fiscal measures are also at risk and should be addressed before Michigan falls into a difficult financial position.
