North Carolina has above average outcomes for government efficiency and effectiveness. The state has low debt, stable pension system, excellent credit rating and a transparent government. It is also a high performing state in the measures of: Job growth, water quality, Gross Domestic Product, and workplace injury.

Despite being a large economy, the state has low economic outcomes. The state has high unemployment, high rates of poverty, and low household income. North Carolina also has below average measures in overall education and public health.

Recommendations
Time and time again, education has been linked to reduced rates of poverty and higher average income. to this end, North Carolina’s focus should be on the education system. While most individual outcomes are average compared to the other states, improved outcomes could alleviate the poverty plaguing the state. Over time, this would improve the economic output of North Carolina.
