South Carolina has low taxes. This and higher SAT/ACT scores are the only areas the Palmetto State stands out.
The state has below average and worse rankings in education, economy, public safety, environment, health and government. The state has high rates of unemployment, low high school graduation rates, high poverty rates, high obesity rates, high infant mortality rates. The state’s government is has a high debt-to-GDP ratio and spending rate.
With so many low outcomes measures, where to start? Education seems like a good choice. The state’s k-12 measures are the worst among education outcomes and focusing in this area is a must. Increased education outcomes over time may reduce the rate of poverty and improve the economic scores as results. Following this, South Carolina should concentrate on reducing the level of crime and traffic fatalities.
