Vermont is known for its pristine environment, and they have the data to show for it. The Green Mountain State is best state in the union of environment, especially in carbon emissions, water and air quality. The state is also 3rd in education, 4th in health measures, and 7th in infrastructure. The state also performs excellently in public safety (9th overall).
The only goal areas the state falters are in economy and government. The state economy is small and stagnant, with bottom 10 rankings in job growth, business growth, business competitiveness, and venture capital. Government spending and rate of taxation are also very high.
States have personalities. From the evidence it is clear Vermont knows what it is and is not. However, if it ever chose to increase its rankings and endeavor for greater outcomes in economy, the first option is to increase GDP growth and encourage innovative new business into Vermont. The government fiscal measures are cause for some concern and should be addressed. However, given the above average S&P credit rating on the state’s finances, solving the spending issue can wait for another time.
