Results Champion?: YES

Overall, Washington is one of the best states in the union in terms of results driven government. No one area falls below 17th in the state rankings. The two places the state shines the brightest are in public safety (3rd) and government (4th). With regards to specific measures, only a few are in the bottom 10. With such good outcomes, Washington needs only to maintain such good performance and close the gap in a few sluggish areas.

The few areas Washington can improve are in property crimes, water quality, workplace injury, and their government use of technology. The fact that these poor performing areas are disparate and unrelated indicates no one simple “mop-up” program to alleviate the problems.

Recommendations
Washington’s few problems are strikingly similar to those in Oregon, the neighboring state with similar culture, geography, and politics. One way to improve both states’ outcomes could be to partner for solutions in order to better understand the underlying issues affecting their outcomes. Shared understanding could then lead to shared policy solutions and government resources to tackle Washington’s few poor performance measures.
